Arrival & lake city orientation
Pick up your Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card at the SBB ticket counter inside Zürich main station. Do this before your Lucerne train — the pass activates on first use. Swiss Travel Pass covers almost all trains, boats, and city transport. Half Fare Card halves all ticket prices and pairs well with the Jungfrau Travel Pass you'll buy in Interlaken.
Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB), ticket counterDirect IC train, 1h 15min. Sit on the right side of the direction of travel for lake views approaching Lucerne. Trains run every 30 minutes.
Zürich HB → Lucerne stationCheck in and collect the Lucerne City Guest Card from reception — it gives free bus and tram rides within the city for your stay. Grab lunch near the old town; the area around the Kapellbrücke has plenty of options for every budget.

Kapellbrücke, Lucerne old townThe streets around the Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz have good restaurants at various price points. Rösti, cheese fondue, or raclette are the Swiss staples worth trying on night one.

Take the 08:00 boat from the Lucerne pier to start before crowds. Note: the cogwheel railway is NOT covered by Swiss Travel Pass — supplement applies.
