Luxury: private van or a Cinnamon Air seaplane hop to Sigiriya ($350–450 pp). 💡 Apply for your Sri Lanka ETA online BEFORE you fly (eta.gov.lk) — approval is usually instant and it is far cheaper than on-arrival counters. Change a little cash at the airport bank counter; the rate is better than hotels. 🇱🇰 Greet with 'Ayubowan' (may you live long), palms together, a slight bow. Sri Lankans are exceptionally warm — a smile and a head-wobble go a long way. Use your RIGHT hand to give and receive money or gifts.

The classic first leg: paddy fields, coconut estates, roadside king-coconut stalls and buffalo curd sellers. Budget: A/C intercity bus Colombo→Dambulla (Rs 600/$2) then tuk-tuk. Premium: private car with driver-guide — stop for a curd-and-treacle break and a spice-garden visit at Matale. Luxury: chauffeured SUV with cool towels and water, or the 30-min Cinnamon Air seaplane from Colombo. 💡 Ask your driver to stop at a roadside stall for buffalo curd with kithul treacle (~Rs 400/$1.30) — it's a Sri Lankan institution and a perfect jet-lag snack. Sit on the LEFT side of the vehicle for the best views heading north. 🇱🇰 Hiring a driver-guide for the whole trip is the local norm, not a luxury — roads are slow and signage is thin. Tip your driver Rs 2,000–3,000/day ($7–10) at the end; it is expected and appreciated.

Budget: family guesthouse or homestay with home-cooked curry (Rs 4,000–9,000/$13–30). Premium: Sigiriya Village, Aliya Resort & Spa or Hotel Sigiriya — all with Lion Rock views from the pool (Rs 24,000–46,000/$79–151). Luxury: Water Garden Sigiriya or Jetwing Vil Uyana — private villas over lily ponds and paddy, with resident slender loris (Rs 105,000–215,000/$344–705). 💡 Pick a hotel with a Lion Rock view from the pool — watching Sigiriya turn gold at sunset from the water is the single best free experience in the Cultural Triangle. Mosquito repellent from home beats what's sold locally. 🇱🇰 Remove shoes before entering a home or homestay's living area. Accepting a cup of plain tea when offered is polite — refusing outright can read as cold.

The locals' choice: a 20–30 min scramble up Sigiriya's sister rock for the definitive view OF Lion Rock, with 360° jungle in every direction. Entry Rs 1,000/$3.30 (foreigners), open 05:00–18:00. The final stretch is a genuine boulder scramble — hands needed. Budget/Premium/Luxury all do the same climb; a guide (Rs 2,500/$8) adds the Buddhist cave-temple history at the base. ⚠️ Bring a head torch — the descent in the dark after sunset is genuinely tricky over the boulders. Wear real shoes, not flip-flops. Shoulders and knees must be covered at the cave temple at the base. 🇱🇰 You pass a reclining Buddha statue on the way up — never turn your back to a Buddha image for a photo (it is illegal and deeply offensive in Sri Lanka, and tourists have been deported for it). Remove hats and shoes in the shrine area.

The national meal: red rice ringed by 6–12 small curries — dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, snake gourd, coconut sambol, papadam, and a fish or chicken curry. Budget: village 'rice & curry' at a local eatery, Rs 700–1,500/$2–5. Premium: a hotel curry buffet or a home-cooked village dinner with a cooking demo, Rs 3,500–6,500/$11–21. Luxury: a private paddy-side dinner with a chef, Rs 12,000–25,000/$39–82. 💡 Ask for 'not spicy' if you're unsure — Sri Lankan food is hotter than Indian and the chilli is real. Coconut sambol (pol sambol) will still light you up. Eat with your fingers if you're game; it genuinely tastes better. 🇱🇰 Eat with the RIGHT hand only — mix the rice and curry with your fingertips and push with the thumb. The left hand is considered unclean. Wait to be served; the host serves guests first.

Sri Lanka's icon: King Kasyapa's 5th-century sky palace on a 200 m granite monolith, reached by 1,200 steps past the mirror wall, the graffiti gallery, the 1,500-year-old frescoes of the 'cloud maidens', and the giant lion's paws. Foreigner entry USD 36 / Rs 10,900 (2026 rate) — the most expensive ticket in the country and worth every rupee. Open 07:00–17:30 (last entry 17:00); gates open 06:30 in practice. Allow 2.5–3 hrs. A licensed guide is Rs 5,000–8,000/$16–26 for the group. ⚠️ Start at 06:30 sharp. By 09:00 the stairs are a queue in fierce heat and the metal spiral staircase to the frescoes becomes a bottleneck. Also beware the hornets — if the wardens sound the alarm, stay still and crouch, do not run or swat. 🇱🇰 This is an archaeological site, not a temple, so dress code is relaxed — but modesty is still appreciated. Do not touch the mirror wall or the frescoes; the oils from skin are destroying them. Never pose with your back to Buddha imagery in the museum.

Sri Lankan breakfast is a highlight: bowl-shaped 'appa' (hoppers) with an egg cracked in the centre, string hoppers with dhal and coconut sambol, or kiribath (milk rice) with lunu miris. Five cave shrines carved into a granite overhang, continuously in use for 22 centuries — 153 Buddha statues and 2,100 m² of ceiling murals that follow the curve of the rock. Entry Rs 2,000/$6.50, open 07:00–19:00. A 15-min climb of ~350 steps from the golden-temple car park. Budget: self-guided. Premium/Luxury: a guide (Rs 3,000/$10) unlocks the iconography — which mudra means what, and why Cave 2 is the masterpiece. ⚠️ Shoes must be removed at the entrance and the stone gets scorching by midday — bring socks. Monkeys will snatch water bottles, sunglasses and snacks; hold everything. Shoulders AND knees must be covered for entry (no exceptions). 🇱🇰 Walk clockwise around Buddha images and stupas. Never point your feet at a Buddha statue when sitting. Photographs of yourself WITH a Buddha (back turned, posing) are illegal — photograph the statue alone. Remove hats inside.

The road climbs out of the dry zone into the hills. Optional stops: the Matale Spice Garden (free tour, but a hard sell on overpriced 'ayurvedic' products — browse, don't buy) and the Nalanda Gedige. Lunch en route at a rice-and-curry buffet, Rs 900–2,500/$3–8. ⚠️ The Matale spice-garden 'free tour' ends in a high-pressure sales room where oils cost 5–10× the shop price. Enjoy the botany, decline the products politely — your driver earns commission, so say no clearly and early. 🇱🇰 A polite but firm 'no thank you' with a smile is understood everywhere. Sri Lankans avoid direct confrontation, so a soft refusal repeated calmly works better than a sharp one.

The holiest Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, housing a tooth of the Buddha inside a gold casket. Entry Rs 2,000/$6.50. Time your visit for a 'thevava' (ceremonial offering) at 05:30, 09:30 or 18:30, when drums and horns sound and the inner chamber is opened. Beside it: Kandy Lake and the Royal Palace museum. Budget: walk in. Premium/Luxury: a guide explains the relic's political role — whoever holds the tooth holds the right to rule. 💡 The 18:30 evening thevava is the most atmospheric — drums, oil lamps, and pilgrims with lotus flowers. Arrive 20 min early. Security is airport-grade; no large bags. 🇱🇰 Strict dress code: shoulders and knees covered, WHITE or light clothing is traditional. Shoes off and hats removed at the entrance (there's a shoe counter, Rs 25). Do not stand higher than a Buddha image or turn your back to the relic chamber for photos.

One of Asia's great drives: hairpin bends through emerald tea terraces, waterfalls at every turn, and air that turns properly cold. Stop at Ramboda Falls (109 m, free viewpoint) and a working tea factory. The temperature drops from 30°C to 14°C in three hours. 💡 Pack a fleece or light jacket in your day bag — Nuwara Eliya at 1,868 m drops to 10–14°C at night and almost no hotel has heating. Motion-sickness tablets help on the A5's hairpins. 🇱🇰 Tea pluckers (mostly Malaiyaha Tamil women) are working, not posing — always ask before photographing, and a small tip (Rs 200–500) is fair if they agree.

Budget: hill guesthouse with a hot-water bucket and extra blankets (Rs 4,000–10,000/$13–33). Premium: Araliya Green Hills or Heritance Tea Factory — a converted 1930s tea factory with the original machinery in the lobby (Rs 27,000–52,000/$89–170). Luxury: the colonial Grand Hotel, or a Ceylon Tea Trails bungalow with a butler and a log fire (Rs 120,000–275,000/$393–902). ⚠️ Nuwara Eliya gets genuinely cold and damp; confirm your room has a heater or a hot-water bottle. Book Tea Trails and the Grand Hotel months ahead — they are small and sell out. 🇱🇰 The Grand Hotel and Hill Club keep colonial dress codes for dinner (jacket, no shorts). Elsewhere, smart-casual is fine. Alcohol is not sold on 'poya' (full-moon) days anywhere in Sri Lanka — hotels may serve discreetly to guests.
