8 Days in Sri Lanka — Hill Country & South Coast

CMB is 35 km north of Colombo and the gateway for almost all arrivals. Clear immigration with your pre-approved ETA/visa, collect bags, then buy a tourist SIM in arrivals (Dialog or Mobitel, ~Rs 1,500/$5 for 25 GB + calls — among the cheapest data anywhere). Budget: airport A/C bus or the PickMe app. Premium: pre-booked private car with an English-speaking chauffeur-guide ($60–75/day for the whole car, split between travellers). Luxury: private SUV, or a Cinnamon Air seaplane hop straight to Sigiriya ($350–450 pp, 30 min). 💡 Apply for your Sri Lanka ETA online BEFORE you fly (eta.gov.lk) — approval is usually instant and cheaper than the on-arrival counter. Change a little cash at the airport bank desk; the rate beats hotels. 🇱🇰 Greet with 'Ayubowan' (may you live long), palms together, a slight bow. Sri Lankans are exceptionally warm — a smile and a head-wobble go a long way. Use your RIGHT hand to give and receive money or gifts.

The classic first leg: paddy fields, coconut estates, roadside king-coconut stalls and buffalo-curd sellers. Budget: A/C intercity bus Colombo→Dambulla (Rs 600/$2) then a tuk-tuk. Premium: private car with driver-guide — stop for curd-and-treacle and a Matale spice garden. Luxury: chauffeured SUV with cold towels, or the seaplane. 💡 Ask your driver to stop for buffalo curd with kithul treacle (~Rs 400/$1.30) — a Sri Lankan institution and the perfect jet-lag snack. Sit on the LEFT side of the vehicle for the best views heading north. 🇱🇰 Hiring a driver-guide for the whole trip is the local norm, not a luxury — roads are slow and signage thin. Tip Rs 2,000–3,000/day ($7–10) at the end; it is expected and appreciated.

Budget: family guesthouse or homestay with home-cooked curry (Rs 4,000–9,000/$13–30). Premium: Sigiriya Village, Aliya Resort & Spa or Hotel Sigiriya — all with Lion Rock views from the pool (Rs 24,000–46,000/$79–151). Luxury: Water Garden Sigiriya or Jetwing Vil Uyana — private villas over lily ponds and paddy, with resident slender loris (Rs 105,000–215,000/$344–705). 💡 Pick a hotel with a Lion Rock view from the pool — watching Sigiriya turn gold at sunset from the water is the best free experience in the Cultural Triangle. Bring mosquito repellent from home. 🇱🇰 Remove shoes before entering a home or a homestay's living area. Accepting a cup of plain tea when offered is polite — refusing outright can read as cold.

The locals' choice: a 20–30 min scramble up Sigiriya's sister rock for the definitive view OF Lion Rock, with 360° jungle all round. Entry Rs 1,000/$3.30 (foreigners), open 05:00–18:00. The final stretch is a genuine boulder scramble — hands needed. All three tiers do the same climb; a guide (Rs 2,500/$8) adds the cave-temple history at the base. ⚠️ Bring a head torch — the descent in the dark after sunset is genuinely tricky over the boulders. Wear real shoes, not flip-flops. Shoulders and knees must be covered at the cave temple at the base. 🇱🇰 You pass a reclining Buddha on the way up — never turn your back to a Buddha image for a photo. It is illegal in Sri Lanka and tourists have been detained and deported for it. Remove hats and shoes in the shrine area.

The national meal: red rice ringed by 6–12 small curries — dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, snake gourd, pol sambol, papadam and a fish or chicken curry. Budget: village rice & curry, Rs 700–1,500/$2–5. Premium: a hotel curry buffet or a village home dinner with a cooking demo, Rs 3,500–6,500/$11–21. Luxury: a private paddy-side dinner with a chef, Rs 12,000–25,000/$39–82. 💡 Ask for 'not spicy' if you're unsure — Sri Lankan food is hotter than Indian and the chilli is real. Pol sambol will still light you up. Eat with your fingers if you're game; it genuinely tastes better. 🇱🇰 Eat with the RIGHT hand only — mix rice and curry with your fingertips and push with the thumb. The left hand is considered unclean. Wait to be served; the host serves guests first.

Sri Lanka's icon: King Kasyapa's 5th-century sky palace on a 200 m granite monolith, reached by 1,200 steps past the mirror wall, the graffiti gallery, the 1,500-year-old 'cloud maiden' frescoes and the giant lion's paws. Foreigner entry USD 36 / Rs 10,900 (2026 rate) — the country's most expensive ticket and worth every rupee. Open 07:00–17:30, gates in practice from 06:30. Allow 2.5–3 hrs. A licensed guide is Rs 5,000–8,000/$16–26 for the group. ⚠️ Start at 06:30 sharp — today is a long travel day AND by 09:00 the stairs are a queue in fierce heat. Beware the hornets: if the wardens sound the alarm, crouch and stay still; do not run or swat. 🇱🇰 This is an archaeological site, not a temple, so the dress code is relaxed — but modesty is still appreciated. Don't touch the mirror wall or the frescoes; skin oils are destroying them. Never pose with your back to Buddha imagery in the museum.

Sri Lankan breakfast is a highlight: bowl-shaped 'appa' (hoppers) with an egg cracked in the centre, string hoppers with dhal and pol sambol, or kiribath (milk rice) with lunu miris. Budget: guesthouse breakfast, Rs 800–1,500/$3–5. Premium: hotel buffet with a live hopper station, usually included. Luxury: à la carte with papaya, wood-apple juice and Ceylon tea. 💡 Order an EGG hopper — the yolk cooks into the crisp lacy edge. Eat properly now; today's next real meal is 4 hours away in Kandy. 🇱🇰 Saying 'bohoma sthuthi' (thank you very much) to the cook is genuinely appreciated. Breakfast is a social meal — but today, keep it moving.

Five cave shrines carved into a granite overhang, in continuous use for 22 centuries — 153 Buddha statues and 2,100 m² of ceiling murals following the curve of the rock. Entry Rs 2,000/$6.50, open 07:00–19:00, a 15-min climb of ~350 steps. Budget: self-guided. Premium/Luxury: a guide (Rs 3,000/$10) unlocks the iconography — which mudra means what, and why Cave 2 is the masterpiece. ⚠️ Shoes off at the entrance and the stone is scorching by midday — bring socks. Monkeys will snatch bottles, sunglasses and snacks. Shoulders AND knees must be covered, no exceptions. 🇱🇰 Walk clockwise around Buddha images and stupas. Never point your feet at a Buddha statue when sitting. Photographs of yourself with your back to a Buddha are illegal — photograph the statue alone. Remove hats inside.

The road climbs out of the dry zone into the hills. Optional stop: the Matale spice gardens (free tour, hard sell at the end — browse, don't buy) or Nalanda Gedige. Budget: intercity bus, Rs 250/$0.80. Premium/Luxury: your private vehicle, with photo stops. ⚠️ The Matale spice-garden 'free tour' ends in a sales room where oils cost 5–10× shop price, and your driver earns commission. Enjoy the botany, decline the products clearly and early. 🇱🇰 A polite but firm 'no thank you' with a smile is understood everywhere. Sri Lankans avoid direct confrontation, so a soft refusal repeated calmly works better than a sharp one.

Budget: a rice-and-curry buffet or a lunch packet, Rs 900–2,000/$3–7. Premium: the Empire Café or a lakeside hotel restaurant, Rs 2,500–5,000/$8–16. Luxury: lunch at the Kandy House or Helga's Folly, Rs 8,000–16,000/$26–52. 💡 Eat properly here — the Kandy→Ella drive that follows is 5+ hours with only roadside stalls. Grab water and snacks for the car. 🇱🇰 Lunch is the main meal of the day in Sri Lanka; expect the biggest curry spread at midday rather than in the evening.

The holiest Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, housing a tooth of the Buddha inside a gold casket. Entry Rs 2,000/$6.50. Ceremonial 'thevava' offerings at 05:30, 09:30 and 18:30 open the inner chamber with drums and horns — the afternoon visit misses these but is far quieter. Beside it: Kandy Lake and the Royal Palace museum. Premium/Luxury: a guide explains the relic's political role — whoever holds the tooth holds the right to rule. 💡 If you'd rather catch the 18:30 thevava ceremony, that means overnighting in Kandy and reaching Ella on Day 3 — a much gentler trip. See the Transport sheet for that variant. 🇱🇰 Strict dress code: shoulders and knees covered, WHITE or light clothing traditional. Shoes and hats off at the entrance (shoe counter, Rs 25). Never stand higher than a Buddha image or turn your back to the relic chamber for photos.

One of Asia's great drives, done as a transfer: hairpins through emerald tea terraces, waterfalls at every turn, and air that turns properly cold at Nuwara Eliya before dropping into Ella. Photo stops at Ramboda Falls (109 m, free) and a roadside tea factory. The temperature swings from 30°C to 14°C and back in five hours. ⚠️ This is the longest day of the trip — roughly 9–10 hrs of moving from the 06:00 Sigiriya start. You'll reach Ella after dark. Keep a fleece in your day bag for the Nuwara Eliya stretch, and take motion-sickness tablets before the A5 hairpins. 🇱🇰 Tea pluckers (mostly Malaiyaha Tamil women) are working, not posing — always ask before photographing, and a small tip (Rs 200–500) is fair if they agree.

Ella is a one-street mountain town turned backpacker capital — rooftop cafés, banana-leaf breakfasts and jungle views. Budget: guesthouse, Rs 4,000–10,000/$13–33. Premium: 98 Acres Resort (built into a tea plantation) or EKHO Ella, Rs 30,000–58,000/$98–190. Luxury: Nine Skies bungalow or Ella Jungle Resort, reached by jeep and river, Rs 105,000–230,000/$344–754. ⚠️ Tell your hotel you're arriving late — small Ella guesthouses lock up and kitchens close by 21:00. Ask them to hold dinner, or eat on the road at Nuwara Eliya. 🇱🇰 Ella is relaxed and touristy but still a Buddhist village — walk into town covered up. Keep noise down after 22:00; Sri Lankan towns sleep early.
