8 Days in Sri Lanka

CMB is 35 km north of Colombo. Clear immigration with your pre-approved ETA, collect bags, then buy a tourist SIM in arrivals (Dialog or Mobitel, ~Rs 1,500/$5 for 25 GB + calls — among the cheapest data anywhere). Budget: airport bus to Colombo then southbound expressway bus. Premium: pre-booked private car with an English-speaking chauffeur-guide ($60–75/day for the whole car, split between travellers). Luxury: chauffeured SUV, or a Cinnamon Air seaplane straight to Bentota lagoon. 💡 Apply for your Sri Lanka ETA online BEFORE you fly (eta.gov.lk) — approval is usually instant and cheaper than the on-arrival counter. Change a little cash at the airport bank desk; the rate beats hotels. 🇱🇰 Greet with 'Ayubowan' (may you live long), palms together, a slight bow. Sri Lankans are exceptionally warm — a smile goes a long way. Use your RIGHT hand to give and receive money or gifts.

The expressway bypasses Colombo entirely and turns what used to be a four-hour coastal crawl into ninety minutes. Budget: expressway bus, Rs 600/$2. Premium/Luxury: your private vehicle; tolls Rs 400–800, paid by the driver. 💡 Ask your driver to take the expressway, not the coast road — you'll be on the beach two hours sooner on your most jet-lagged day. Save the scenic coast road for Day 2. 🇱🇰 Sri Lankan drivers use the horn as an 'I'm here' greeting, not aggression — it sounds alarming and means nothing hostile.

A long golden beach where the Bentota River meets the sea — Sri Lanka's original resort strip and the birthplace of Geoffrey Bawa's tropical-modernist architecture. Budget: beach guesthouse or cabana, Rs 4,000–11,000/$13–36. Premium: Taj Bentota Resort, Avani Bentota or Cinnamon Bey, Rs 27,000–58,000/$89–190. Luxury: Anantara Kalutara (a Bawa design finished after his death) or Club Villa, Rs 115,000–260,000/$377–853. 💡 Bentota's beach is wide and the swimming is calmer than the deep-south breaks, but there are still no lifeguards — swim near your hotel and never alone. 🇱🇰 Swimwear is fine on the beach and at hotels, but cover shoulders and thighs the moment you walk into town or a shop. Topless sunbathing is illegal in Sri Lanka.

Five of the world's seven sea-turtle species nest on this stretch of coast. Hatcheries buy eggs from villagers who would otherwise sell them for food, incubate them, and release the hatchlings. Entry Rs 1,000/$3.30. Budget/Premium/Luxury: same visit — the difference is which project you pick. ⚠️ Hatchery quality varies enormously. A GOOD one releases hatchlings within a day or two and keeps only injured adults. A BAD one keeps healthy adults in concrete tanks for years and lets tourists hold hatchlings — handling damages their shells and disrupts imprinting. Ask how long hatchlings are held (should be 0–2 days) and decline if they invite you to pick one up. 🇱🇰 All sea turtles are protected by Sri Lankan law and every visiting species is threatened. Don't touch, hold or photograph with flash. Evening releases (around 18:00) are the ones actually worth timing your visit for.

A 2-hr motorboat safari through a Ramsar-listed mangrove wetland: 64 islands, tunnels of mangrove roots, water monitors, kingfishers, a temple island, a fish-therapy pontoon, and a cinnamon island where a family peels bark by hand exactly as they have for 200 years. Budget: shared boat, Rs 3,000–4,500/$10–15 pp. Premium: private boat for 2–6, Rs 7,500–12,000/$25–39 total. Luxury: a private launch with a naturalist, $80–130 pp. ⚠️ Insist the driver keeps the engine SLOW inside the mangrove tunnels — fast boats damage the root systems and scare the wildlife, and cheap operators race. Agree the route and price (including the cinnamon-island stop) before you board. Late afternoon has the best birdlife and light. 🇱🇰 The cinnamon demonstration ends at a sales table — this is genuine Ceylon cinnamon (far better than the cassia sold as 'cinnamon' in the West) and buying a little is fair exchange for the family's time. Cover your shoulders for the temple island stop.

The national meal: red rice ringed by 6–12 small curries — dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, pol sambol, papadam and a fish or chicken curry. Budget: a local rice & curry, Rs 900–2,000/$3–7. Premium: a hotel curry buffet or Diya Sisila by the river, Rs 3,500–7,000/$11–23. Luxury: a beachfront seafood dinner at Club Villa or Anantara, Rs 14,000–30,000/$46–98. 💡 Ask for 'not spicy' if you're unsure — Sri Lankan food is hotter than Indian and the chilli is real. Pol sambol will still light you up. Eat with your fingers if you're game; it genuinely tastes better. 🇱🇰 Eat with the RIGHT hand only — mix rice and curry with your fingertips and push with the thumb. The left hand is considered unclean. Wait to be served; the host serves guests first.

Sri Lankan breakfast is a highlight: bowl-shaped 'appa' (hoppers) with an egg cracked in the centre, string hoppers with dhal and pol sambol, or kiribath (milk rice) with lunu miris. Usually included in your rate. 💡 Order an EGG hopper — the yolk cooks into the crisp lacy edge. Eat well: today ends with a four-hour drive east and dinner will be late. 🇱🇰 Saying 'bohoma sthuthi' (thank you very much) to the cook is genuinely appreciated. Breakfast is a social, unhurried meal here.

Bentota is Sri Lanka's watersports capital, run mostly out of the river mouth where the water is flat and safe. Menu and typical prices: jet-ski Rs 6,000–9,000/$20–30 (15 min) · banana boat Rs 2,500–4,000/$8–13 pp · tube ride Rs 2,500/$8 · speedboat ride Rs 4,500/$15 · water-skiing or wakeboarding Rs 9,000–15,000/$30–49 · snorkelling trip Rs 6,000–10,000/$20–33 · windsurfing and kayaking also available. Budget: pick one or two (banana boat + tube, ~$20). Premium: a 2-hr multi-activity package, $50–70. Luxury: a private speedboat charter or a diving trip, $120–250. ⚠️ Operators are lightly regulated — check life jackets fit and are buckled, ask whether the operator is registered with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, and confirm your travel insurance covers jet-skis (many policies exclude them). Agree the price and duration BEFORE you get on the water; 'per ride' and 'per person' get conveniently confused afterwards. 🇱🇰 Haggling is normal and expected here — the first price to a tourist is typically 1.5–2× the local rate, and booking two or three activities together gets a real discount. Keep it good-humoured; aggressive bargaining reads as rude.

Budget: a beachside rice-and-curry, Rs 1,200–2,500/$4–8. Premium: a resort lunch or Lunuganga's café, Rs 3,500–7,000/$11–23. Luxury: lunch at Club Villa or the Anantara terrace. 💡 Architecture fans: Geoffrey Bawa's country estate Lunuganga and nearby Brief Garden are both 20 min inland and open to visitors — a beautiful, uncrowded detour if you'd trade an hour of beach for it. 🇱🇰 Lunch is the main meal of the day in Sri Lanka — expect the biggest curry spread at midday rather than in the evening.

A 36-hectare fortified town built by the Portuguese in 1588 and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1649 — still lived in, with coral-stone walls, Dutch colonial villas, a 1939 lighthouse, mosques, churches and boutiques in the old warehouses. FREE to enter and walk (Bentota → Galle is ~1 hr on the E01). Budget: self-guided along the ramparts. Premium: a 2-hr walking guide, Rs 4,500–7,500/$15–25. Luxury: a private historian tour plus high tea at Amangalla, the 1684 former Dutch officers' quarters. 💡 Walk the ramparts anticlockwise from the Old Gate and you'll reach the lighthouse and Flag Rock at the best light. Pedlar Street and Church Street hold the best shops (Barefoot, Stick No Bills prints, certified gem dealers). Leave Galle by 17:30 — the Yala road is dark and slow after that. 🇱🇰 Galle Fort is a living neighbourhood — homes and mosques sit right on the lanes. Keep voices down, don't photograph into doorways, and dress modestly near the Meeran Jumma Masjid. Buy gems only from dealers with a lab report.

East along the coast past Matara, Tangalle and Hambantota into the dry zone — the landscape changes from coconut and paddy to scrub, salt pans and tanks. Most Yala lodges are at Tissamaharama or on the park's edge at Kirinda. Budget: intercity bus, Rs 500/$1.60. Premium/Luxury: your private vehicle, arriving in time for a late dinner. ⚠️ Tell your Yala lodge you're arriving ~20:30 so the kitchen stays open — and confirm your Day 3 safari jeep and 05:00 pickup tonight, before you sleep. Wild elephants cross the Hambantota road after dark; a good driver slows right down. 🇱🇰 If you meet elephants on the road at night, never get out of the vehicle or use flash. Sri Lanka's human-elephant conflict kills people and elephants every year and road encounters are a real risk, not a photo opportunity.

Budget: Tissa guesthouse near the lake, Rs 5,000–12,000/$16–39. Premium: Cinnamon Wild Yala or Jetwing Yala — inside the buffer zone, with wild boar and elephants wandering the grounds, Rs 30,000–62,000/$98–203. Luxury: Wild Coast Tented Lodge, cocoon-shaped tented suites on the beach at the park gate, Rs 150,000–330,000/$492–1,082. ⚠️ Yala closes entirely for maintenance most years around September–mid-October — check before you fix dates. Book safari lodges 1–3 months ahead in season (Feb–Jul is peak for leopard sightings). 🇱🇰 At buffer-zone lodges, wildlife walks through the property — never feed anything, keep food sealed in your room, and use the escort after dark. Wild boar and elephants are genuinely dangerous, not scenery.
