Arrival & leisure day
Budget: pre-booked shared shuttle Rs 900–1,400 ($20–30) or negotiated taxi. Premium: private a/c transfer Rs 2,300 ($50), often resort-included. Luxury: resort limo with chilled towels + bubbly. Transfers run 45–75 min to most coasts — the island is small; nowhere is far. 💡 With only 4 days, aim for a morning arrival flight — it buys you a full first afternoon of lagoon. And tell EVERYONE it's your honeymoon; the perks machine starts at check-in. 💞 'Bonzour!' — Mauritian Creole hello. The island mixes Indian, Creole, Chinese and French heritage seamlessly; its warmth to couples is legendary and entirely sincere.
SSR International Airport (MRU), Plaine Magnien 51100 (20°25'S 57°41'E)Budget: Grand Baie or Flic-en-Flac 3★/aparthotel ($60–120). Premium: Zilwa Attitude, Sugar Beach or Veranda 4–5★ half-board ($180–350). Luxury: One&Only Le Saint Géran, St. Regis Le Morne, Royal Palm ★★★★★ ($700–2,000). Present your marriage certificate — upgrades, décor, sparkling wine and bride discounts (some resorts: 30–50% off the bride) follow. Light poolside lunch on arrival. ⚠️ Honeymoon offers usually require a marriage certificate dated within 6–12 months — pack a copy (paper + phone). Register the honeymoon when BOOKING, not at the desk, for the best upgrade odds. 💞 On a 4-day escape, half-board is ideal — breakfasts + dinners covered, lunches happen out on the two tour days.
Your resort: Grand Baie / Flic-en-Flac / Belle Mare coastsThe 'leisure day' half: Mauritius' lagoons are bathtub-warm (24–29°C) and reef-sheltered. Budget: public beaches are excellent and free. Premium: resort watersports are usually FREE — kayak, SUP, pedalo, glass-bottom boat; use them today since tour days leave no time. Luxury: cabana + first spa taster. Stay in the water till the light turns gold. 💡 Ask for the watersports schedule at check-in and squeeze in the glass-bottom-boat trip today — on a 4-day itinerary this afternoon is your only unscheduled daylight. 💞 Wear reef shoes in the lagoon — coral fragments and the (rare, camouflaged) stonefish are the only things in Mauritius that don't love honeymooners.
Your resort beach / Mont Choisy or Belle Mare public beachBudget: a Grand Baie table — seafood rougaille or octopus curry with palm hearts (Rs 500–900/$11–20). Premium: resort à la carte — fresh capitaine, wine included in half-board. Luxury: the resort's signature restaurant with a lagoon-edge table — or pre-book the private toes-in-the-sand dinner TONIGHT (the 4-day's one shot at it, $120–400/couple). ⚠️ If you want the private beach dinner (lanterns, dedicated waiter, sea at your ankles), tonight or Day 3 are your only slots — book it with the room, 24–48 hrs notice minimum. 💞 Order the palm-heart 'millionaire's salad' and toast with a rum sour — Mauritian rum returns tomorrow-plus-one with credentials. 'Santé!'
Resort restaurant / Grand Baie dining stripFull-day North Island discovery
The capital in a morning: Central Market's spice pyramids, herbal 'tisane' stalls and street snacks; the Caudan Waterfront's umbrella street; Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle) for the harbour panorama. Budget: DIY by bus/taxi. Premium: private driver-guide day (Rs 3,700/$80/car). Luxury: guided heritage day incl. Château de Labourdonnais. 💡 At the market, snack like a local: dholl puri (Rs 15–25!) and gateaux piments — arguably the world's best street food under a dollar. Haggling is expected for souvenirs, gently. 💞 Pick up a tiny vanilla pod bundle or spice mix as your trip's scent-memory — cheaper and more evocative than any gift-shop candle.
Central Market, Farquhar St, Port Louis 11602 (20°09'S 57°30'E)The southern hemisphere's oldest botanical garden (1770): giant Victoria amazonica water lilies (pads to 3m), the talipot palm that flowers once in 60 years then dies, 85 palm varieties, giant tortoises. Rs 200 ($4.50) + guide Rs 150 optional but worth it. 💡 The lily pond photographs best before 14:00 when the flowers close — white on day one, pink on day two, then gone. A guide turns Latin labels into stories for Rs 150. 💞 The lily's two-day bloom is the garden's honeymoon metaphor, and every guide will make it. Let them; it's charming.
SSR Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses 21001 (20°06'S 57°34'E)Budget: continue the street-food crawl — boulettes (Chinese-Mauritian dumplings) and alouda (vanilla-milk dessert drink) (Rs 200/$4.50). Premium: Château de Labourdonnais' La Table du Château ($15–25). Luxury: Le Fangourin garden restaurant ($25–40). 💡 Alouda from a market stall is the island's milkshake heirloom — basil seeds, agar jelly, vanilla milk. One glass, two straws; you know what to do. 💞 Mauritian portions of hospitality exceed portions of food — accept the second helping; refusing twice is the only rudeness.
Pamplemousses / Grand Baie routeThe island's most photographed postcard: the red-roofed chapel against the turquoise channel, Coin de Mire island brooding offshore. Then Grand Baie: La Cuvette beach, boutiques, sunset apéro. Free. Luxury: sunset champagne cruise from Grand Baie ($60–90pp). 💡 The classic shot kneels low on the grass with the roof against the sea and Coin de Mire framed right. Weddings often in progress Sat — photograph the church, not the couple. 💞 It's a working parish — modest dress inside, voices low, and leave a small donation if you light a candle for the marriage. Couldn't hurt.
Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice, Cap Malheureux 30506 (19°59'S 57°37'E)Budget: Happy Rajah for Mauritian-Indian curries (Rs 400–700/$9–15). Premium: Le Capitaine seafront — dorado in vanilla sauce, a Mauritian signature ($20–35). Luxury: back to the resort's fine dining, or Château Mon Désir at Maritim ($60–100). 💡 Fish in VANILLA sauce sounds wrong and tastes like the reason you flew here — order it at least once on the island that perfected it. 💞 Grand Baie is the island's one 'nightlife' town — if you have a dance-floor evening in you, tonight is its only window this trip.
